ACHEMA 2012 - Positive Summary

"There's been a lot of interest in our projects this week," says Karin Meyer-Pannwitt, Senior Manager of BIOCATALYSIS2021. The projects - some 30, with participation from 70 partners from industry, small and medium enterprises and academia are on the quest to find new enzymes that can be used for industrial processes. Catalysts are important for many chemical processes, and often a biocatalyst can make a process run at milder conditions or be more selective than conventional catalysts. The project on display at the ACHEMA-Galleria, for example, is to develop a solid-state fermentation process based on enzymes found in mushrooms. These oxedoreductase enzymes can be used for making detergents, adhesives and synthetic flavors, says Meyer-Pannwitt. This five-year project, "Enzymatic oxidation systems for food and technical applications", which started in 2008, has industrial participation from Henkel, X-Zyme, Stern Enzyme, as well as several universities.

Engineering the third wave of biocatalysis

BIOCATALYSIS2021-Partner Uwe Bornscheuer, University Greifswald Author information: "Over the past ten years, scientific and technological advances have established biocatalysis as a practical and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional metallo- and organocatalysis in chemical synthesis, both in the laboratory and on an industrial scale. Key advances in DNA sequencing and gene synthesis are at the base of tremendous progress in tailoring biocatalysts by protein engineering and design, and the ability to reorganize enzymes into new biosynthetic pathways. To highlight these achievements, here we discuss applications of protein-engineered biocatalysts ranging from commodity chemicals to advanced pharmaceutical intermediates that use enzyme catalysis as a key step."

Commission proposes Strategy

Innovating for Sustainable Growth: a Bioeconomy for Europe

Brussels, 13 February 2012 – The European Commission has adopted a strategy to shift the European economy towards greater and more sustainable use of renewable resources. With the world population approaching 9 billion by 2050 and natural resources finite, Europe needs renewable biological resources for secure and healthy food and feed, as well as for materials, energy, and other products. The Commission's strategy and action plan, "Innovating for Sustainable Growth: a Bioeconomy for Europe", outlines a coherent, cross-sectoral and inter-disciplinary approach to the issue. The goal is a more innovative and low-emissions economy, reconciling demands for sustainable agriculture and fisheries, food security, and the sustainable use of renewable biological resources for industrial purposes, while ensuring biodiversity and environmental protection. The plan therefore focuses on three key aspects: developing new technologies and processes for the bioeconomy; developing markets and competitiveness in bioeconomy sectors; and pushing policymakers and stakeholders to work more closely together.

BIOCATALYSIS Partner News - TU Berlin: Synthetic biology finds new ways to manufacture lantibiotics

Innovative chemical substances from bacteria

Nediljko Budisa and Roderich Süssmuth, both professors at the Berlin-based Cluster of Excellence "Unifying Concepts in Catalysis" (UniCat), have developed a new method for the artificial manufacture of lantibiotics. Lantibiotics are a group of antibiotics containing amino acids that do not occur in the proteins of living creatures: non-proteinogenic amino acids. Now, Budisa and Süssmuth’s results have been published in the online edition of the prestigious science journal Angewandte Chemie.
Synthetic amino acids incorporated into peptide-based lantibiotics dramatically increase the chemical diversity of the two-component lantibiotic lichenicidin, which has antibacterial properties. This procedure enables the biotechnological manufacture of a variety of different lichenicidin compounds, paving the way towards new antibiotics that can be exploited in human medicine.
